Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and 8 Out of 9 Lives

This review will contain spoilers

I enjoyed this movie so much that I had to watch it twice in theatres. Now, I will admit that this was one of those movies that I wanted to see but wasn’t sure if I was rushing to the movie theatres to see. A family member of mine had told me that they had heard from word of mouth that the movie Puss in Boots was worth seeing. I decided to go and check it out.

What I liked:

Wow, this movie is funny, moving, and colorful. I loved the animation. It reminded me of the movie Into the Spiderverse. It was half cartoon half 3D. It made the characters come to life and captured the audience’s attention. Now for the plot, the whole death is coming for me, I did not see that coming. Almost the whole movie I believed that it was bounty hunter after him it wasn’t until the very end that I realized that Lobo really was death. Honestly, one of the best villains of recent animated movies to come out. I liked how the movie added comedy so that the film was not too dark. In addition, I love how it makes fun of fairy tales.

What I did not like

The cat home scene was funny at first but then just got strange. If you haven’t seen it you will know when you see it. It was a little too long for me. Also, I felt like the main plot of why Puss in Boots wasted his 8 lives needed to be a little bit clearer. When I was leaving the theatre, I overheard someone mention how they did not understand why he wanted more lives. As an adult, I understood it as Puss realized that he had wasted a lot of his life not all of it but someone it and he regretted his life. He did not want to die with the legacy that he was lonely and only cared about himself. I think that’s why it was great that they ended the movie explaining that he was going to visit old friends a.k.a Skrek. I personally look forward to seeing the new Shrek movie.

Now to the people saying the movie was too dark for children, my reply is to have you seen the O.G. Shrek movies they were pretty adult to me. Shrek has always been more adult animation compared to Frozen which is more for children. I liked the symbolism of death and I felt like the movie wasn’t so preachy and weird. It was funny, got straight to the point, and was overall a good movie. I feel like people have been watching animations like Turning Red and others and forgot that cartoons can just be funny and have just a simple plot and still be a good movie.

I recommend seeing this movie. It’s an 8/10 for me.

  1. We are planning to see this movie as a family. Shrek has been a family favorite. My son is excited about the animation so hopefully it will keep everyone entertained.
