Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Review – A Heartfelt Reimagining of a Disney Classic
As someone who wasn’t a huge Lilo & Stitch fan growing up, I was still familiar with the original 2002 animated film—and I even had a little Stitch toy as a kid. So when Disney announced the live-action adaptation, I was definitely curious. Before watching the new version, I rewatched the animated original to refresh my memory. This helped me appreciate the changes made in the 2024 live-action film.
A Familiar Story with Some Notable Changes
While the live-action Lilo & Stitch keeps the heart of the original story, there are several key differences that stood out. One major change is the ending: instead of remaining with her sister, Lilo is temporarily placed into foster care so that Nani can go to college. This is a more realistic and bittersweet twist that shifts the story’s resolution compared to the animated version, where the sisters remain together under the same roof.
Another noticeable difference is the omission of some of the more exaggerated comedic elements from the original, such as the alien character Pleakley’s cross-dressing disguise. The tone in the live-action adaptation is slightly more grounded but still full of heart and humor.
Plot Summary
The core plot remains similar. We follow Experiment 626—better known as Stitch—voiced by Chris Sanders (who also voiced him in the original). Stitch is a genetically engineered alien designed for destruction, created by the eccentric scientist Dr. Jumba Jookiba (played by Zach Galifianakis). After Stitch escapes from an alien prison, the Galactic Federation sends Jumba and the Earth “expert,” Agent Pleakley (Billy Magnussen), to capture him on Earth.
Meanwhile, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, we meet Lilo Pelekai (played by newcomer Maia Kealoha), a quirky and lonely young girl being raised by her older sister, Nani (played by Sydney Agudong), after the tragic loss of their parents. Nani works as a waitress at a local hotel while trying to convince Child Protective Services—specifically the stern but caring Cobra Bubbles (played by Courtney B. Vance)—that she’s capable of caring for her younger sister.
Lilo adopts Stitch from an animal shelter, believing he’s a dog, hoping a new pet might help bring her small family together. Chaos quickly follows, as Stitch’s destructive nature makes things even more difficult for Nani. However, over time, Stitch begins to learn about love, empathy, and what it means to be part of a family.
Lilo teaches Stitch the true meaning of “ohana,” a Hawaiian term that means family—and that “ohana means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.” Stitch eventually turns away from his destructive tendencies and protects his newfound family. In the end, he is allowed to stay on Earth under the care of Lilo, while Nani finally gets the opportunity to pursue college, setting up a hopeful future for both sisters.
Performances and Final Thoughts
Maia Kealoha is a standout as Lilo, capturing the character’s innocence, sass, and emotional depth. Sydney Agudong brings warmth and strength to Nani, portraying the struggles of a young woman forced to grow up quickly. The voice acting for Stitch by Chris Sanders remains just as iconic as it was in the animated version.
Visually, the film blends CGI and live action well, especially in scenes featuring Stitch’s antics. While some fans may miss certain elements from the original, I found this remake to be a heartfelt, funny, and emotionally resonant family film.
Overall, Lilo & Stitch (2024) is a charming reimagining that stays true to the spirit of the original while offering a few modern updates. Whether you grew up loving the animated film or you’re discovering the story for the first time, this is a sweet, family-friendly movie that reinforces the timeless message of love, loss, and the importance of chosen family.
Final Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4 out of 5)
If Disney wanted to explore a sequel in this new live-action universe, I’d definitely be interested.
