Supergirl Review: A Disappointing Watch With a Few Standout Moments
Supergirl was, overall, a disappointment for me — but there were still elements of the story I genuinely appreciated.
The Themes That Worked
I loved the feminist thread running through the film, especially the storyline of Supergirl saving girls from being forced into child marriages. It was a strong, clear statement about women’s equality and autonomy, and it added real weight to the film.
I also appreciated the way the movie handled revenge — the idea that seeking revenge won’t actually bring the healing or closure you think it will. That theme tied into a broader exploration of grief and the mourning process, which resonated with me personally after losing a family member last year. Watching Supergirl help this girl process her own grief — while still working through her own — felt honest. Krypto ended up being like her one steady source of comfort, the presence that helped her feel like herself again and rebuild her confidence. That relationship added a lot of emotional depth to her arc.
I also liked the choice to put her under a red sun/moon for parts of the story. It’s easy for a Supergirl story to feel low-stakes when she can just power through any threat, so limiting her abilities actually made the character and the stakes feel stronger.
Where It Fell Short
That said, I do think there was more the film could have done with her storyline overall. The pieces that worked were strong, but they didn’t feel like they added up to a fully satisfying arc.
Looking Ahead
I’m looking forward to seeing her show up in the next Superman movie — hopefully that gives the character more room to grow and reach a wider audience.
