Review of The Penguin Man: A Surprisingly Well-Done Show
At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect from The Penguin Man. I’ll be honest—I was concerned the show would be poorly done. My worries stemmed from my dislike of the Gotham series, and I found myself hoping this new show wouldn’t follow that same path. Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong. This show was incredibly well done, and I was pleasantly surprised.
One of the things I really appreciated about The Penguin Man was how it avoided the typical trope of “pity the villain.” So many shows today try to humanize the villain, but this one stayed true to the idea that Penguin is a villain, and he’s unapologetically evil. I loved that refreshing take—Penguin knows he’s evil, and he embraces it. He doesn’t try to justify his actions or earn sympathy, which made the show feel authentic and grounded.
The series picks up right after the events of The Batman movie, where Penguin is striving to become a powerful figure in Gotham. His journey to power is filled with tension, especially after he takes out a powerful leader’s son, which sets off a chain of events that forces him into a difficult situation. From there, we watch as he works to rebuild his empire amidst a gang war, all while trying to protect his mother. Along the way, he also takes on a mentee named Victor, adding another layer to his complex character.
What stood out to me was how The Penguin Man ties into the larger Gotham universe. The show doesn’t just focus on Penguin; it connects various elements of the world, building the narrative in a way that makes it feel like an integral part of the DC universe. It was refreshing to see how everything interconnected, and the storytelling was consistently engaging.
I could easily see the potential for a second season, but if it doesn’t happen, I’ll be content. The first season wrapped up well, and I’m hopeful they’ll continue with this momentum. The show definitely left me more excited for The Batman 2, as I’m curious to see how these characters and storylines will evolve.
