Leaving a Toxic Workplace Changed Me

About a year ago, I left what I considered my first “big girl” corporate job after only a few months, and honestly, the experience changed me in many ways.

Walking into a corporate environment for the first time taught me lessons I had never fully understood before. Looking back, I can admit that I made mistakes. I overshared personal information, vented too much, participated in conversations I should have stayed out of, and did not always carry myself as professionally as I needed to.

At the same time, I also experienced an environment that felt emotionally exhausting and unhealthy for me personally. The pressure, public criticism, workplace tension, and constant stress negatively affected my mental health and confidence.

One thing I learned is that not every workplace culture is the right fit for every person. Some environments thrive on constant pressure and competition, while others are more collaborative and supportive. Since leaving that position, I have worked in healthier environments where I feel safer, more respected, and more confident in myself.

The biggest lesson I learned was the importance of professionalism and boundaries. I no longer overshare at work, involve myself in workplace gossip, or mix too much of my personal life into professional settings. I focus on doing my job well, being respectful, and protecting my peace.

I also learned that growth sometimes comes from uncomfortable experiences. While I still acknowledge my own mistakes, I can honestly say the experience helped me mature, become more self-aware, and better understand the kind of work environment I need in order to thrive.

Healing from difficult workplace experiences takes time, but I am grateful that I have grown from it and become stronger because of it.
