WSA 2024: Celebrating the Power of Film, TV, and Game Music
This year’s World Soundtrack Awards (WSA) truly showcased how music elevates stories. Jerskin Fendrix made history, winning both Discovery and Film Composer of the Year for his work on Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness. That’s a massive achievement for a newcomer in the film scoring world.
Natalie Holt took home the Television Composer of the Year award for Loki Season 2—definitely well-earned after her two previous nominations. And if you loved Barbie (who didn’t?), you’ll be thrilled to know that Billie Eilish and Finneas won Best Original Song for their hauntingly beautiful “What Was I Made For?” Talk about an emotional soundtrack.
The game music category continues to gain recognition, with Brandon Boone’s Slay the Princess winning the WSA Game Music Award. It’s incredible to see how much the world of video game scores is evolving.
Elliot Goldenthal’s Lifetime Achievement Award was another standout moment. His career has been nothing short of legendary, with scores from Batman Forever to Frida that have left a lasting mark on the industry.
It’s clear that the WSA is doing a fantastic job of recognizing how essential music is to storytelling—whether it’s in film, television, or even gaming. The 2024 winners are proof that soundtracks are as powerful as the visuals they accompany.
