Soundtracks That Shape Stories: Highlights from the 2024 World Soundtrack Awards
As someone who’s always tuned into how soundtracks can transform the viewing experience, I was excited to see this year’s World Soundtrack Awards. Jerskin Fendrix made history, winning both Discovery and Film Composer of the Year with his stunning scores for Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness. Fendrix is definitely someone to keep an ear out for.
Natalie Holt, one of my favorites, also won Television Composer of the Year for her work on Loki season 2—well deserved! Her scores bring depth and personality to characters in a way that just sticks with you long after the credits roll.
Then there’s the Barbie sensation. Billie Eilish and Finneas took home Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?”, showing again how they excel at crafting emotionally charged music that resonates on a personal level.
A big shoutout also to Brandon Boone, who won the Game Music Award for Slay the Princess. Video game music continues to break boundaries, and it’s cool to see Boone’s dark and immersive score recognized.
And we can’t forget the legend Elliot Goldenthal, awarded for his lifetime of work. From Batman Forever to Frida, his scores have been part of iconic films that shaped many of us.
This year’s WSA reminded me of how crucial music is to film and TV, not just as background but as a storytelling element. If you haven’t dived into these soundtracks yet, you’re missing out!
