Transformers One

The trailer for this movie looked so bad that I almost didn’t go see it. Honestly, the advertising was terrible, and I don’t know who thought those trailers were a good idea. The only reason I went was because of word-of-mouth and hearing positive feedback from people who attended the pre-screenings. So, while the advertising was bad, the movie itself was really good.

This movie exists in the same universe as Michael Bay’s, but even if you haven’t seen his movies, you can still follow along. I mention Michael Bay because, in his Transformers films, the Transformers usually explain their backstory to the humans—details about their planet, who they are, etc. In this movie, though, you finally get the full backstory of what happened between Optimus Prime and Megatron, how they were once friends, enslaved, and forced to work in mines, and how they eventually broke free. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but I loved how the movie paid homage to the original Transformers series. There were a lot of cameos, and anyone familiar with the Transformers franchise will definitely enjoy this film.

When I went to see it in theaters, it was a cool experience because there were kids, teens, and adults in the audience. Usually, for Transformers movies, the audience skews younger, but this time there were plenty of adults too. Overall, I really liked the movie. I loved the colors, and I got to see it in Dolby. I wish I’d seen it in 3D because some of the features would have looked amazing in that format.

What I liked most about the plot was its consistency. It didn’t feel like a waste of time—everything led up to the main point, and the characters were introduced in a way that made sense and showed why they were important. Some of the jokes fell flat for me and felt a little forced. Ironically, I laughed at things that probably weren’t meant to be funny, so it was hit or miss in that department.

The artwork and the explanations of the Transformers’ lives were great. The movie even ties into the Netflix Transformers animated series. If you haven’t seen that, I’d recommend it, as it helps explain more of the storyline. Overall, I enjoyed how the movie brought together the basic elements of the Transformers universe, and I hope there’s a part two. If you do go see it in theaters, make sure to stay for the post-credits scene!
