I started watching the show because I saw the promo for it all over San Diego Comic-Con 2024. There was a lot of promotion, and there was even an experience related to the show. I didn’t get to do the experience at San Diego Comic-Con due to time constraints. I had so many things to do that I just didn’t get around to it. However, a family member of mine got to attend and said that it was a lot of fun and a great experience. Seeing so much promotion did get me interested, so when I got back to Florida, I took some time to watch the show.
First and foremost, I will say this: it is an adult show. This is not a children’s show, and I want to make that very clear. The show contains a lot of adult content.
The story centers around many characters; there’s not really one main character. You could say one of them is more central, but there are about six or seven storylines going on.
The first storyline involves a man who is the owner of a betting company. His job is to ensure that everyone places their bets before the chariot races or the gladiator shows begin. He makes his money this way. His backstory is that he was a former slave who ran away from his owner, assumed a different identity, and rose to become the owner of the betting company. He has even greater ambitions to become wealthier and more powerful.
The second storyline follows a woman whose two children are taken by the Roman Empire. Her son is taken to be a gladiator, and her two daughters are taken to be slaves in Rome. She travels to Rome to try and free her children, ultimately working for the betting company owner. She uses him in her quest to free her children.
The third storyline involves two brothers who are fighting for their father’s approval to be the emperor. Their father is the current emperor, and both brothers are trying to win his favor to become the heir to the throne. They despise each other and are in fierce competition.
There are a mix of different stories going on, but these are the main ones. Throughout the episodes, you see each part of their stories and how they are connected and intertwined, leading to the climax.
Overall, the show is quite violent, as implied by its title, Those About to Die. Every episode has some form of violence, and characters often die. There are many scenes that are very hard to watch, and I had to fast-forward through some of them because they were so difficult to sit through. However, I will say that the main storyline is somewhat interesting. The show ends on a cliffhanger, suggesting the possibility of a second season. If not, they did somewhat wrap up the story. But if there is a second season, it would likely continue the storylines of the characters.
Overall, there were parts of the show that felt like they were made by an older man. There were definitely some scenes that, as I mentioned, were hard to watch. In general, I had mixed feelings about the show. It was watchable, but it wasn’t the best thing ever. It was interesting, to say the least.
