The idea of the Bride of Frankenstein

The new adaptation of Frankenstein, centered on the idea of the Bride of Frankenstein, is an ambitious film that unfortunately feels messy at times. Early in the movie, the storytelling feels scattered and somewhat unfocused, with multiple plotlines competing for attention. Because of this, the film occasionally feels uneven, as if it is trying to juggle too many ideas at once without fully developing them.

What I found most interesting, however, was the film’s underlying feminist themes. The story explores how the Bride and Frankenstein become instruments of justice, targeting men responsible for horrific acts such as assault, rape, and murder. The narrative frames their actions as a kind of revolutionary response to the violence and oppression women faced during that time period. That idea—women seeking justice and respect in a society that often denied them power—was the most compelling aspect of the film.

The lead actress largely carries the movie and delivers a strong performance, bringing depth and intensity to the Bride’s character. The film also plays with the idea of the Bride being guided and influenced by Mary Shelley, which adds an interesting meta element to the story.

Where the movie struggles most is in its execution. The editing feels inconsistent, and the multiple storylines sometimes make the narrative feel chaotic rather than cohesive. With a tighter script and stronger editing, the film’s themes of revolution, justice, and women’s autonomy could have landed with much greater impact.

Overall, despite its flaws, the film has intriguing ideas and a memorable central performance. Because of that, I would give it 3 out of 5 stars.
