Movie Review: Content Warning – Adult Themes (Sexual Assault, Rape, Violence)
I had seen a few ads for this movie when watching previous films in the theater, but honestly, the trailer didn’t really grab my attention. However, after its release, I noticed a lot of online buzz. Some people found it fascinating, while others didn’t enjoy it at all. The mixed reactions made me curious, so I decided to check it out.
Content Warning: Before diving in, please note this review contains spoilers and addresses sensitive content, including sexual assault, rape, kidnapping, memory loss, and violence. If you’re uncomfortable with these topics, you may want to avoid this movie.
To start, this film centers on themes of sexual assault and kidnapping, which I wasn’t aware of going in, and I believe many viewers weren’t either. These themes are at the core of the story, so if you’re sensitive to such content, be prepared. Personally, I found certain scenes difficult to watch due to their disturbing nature.
The plot revolves around an island where wealthy people abuse women, erase their memories, and then repeat the process. The two main characters slowly piece together what’s happening and eventually escape. The film plays with the theme of memory loss and how it keeps the characters trapped in this cycle of abuse.
Despite the challenging content, I have to say the movie was well-made. Zoë Kravitz, in her directorial debut, did an excellent job. The details and pacing of the film are impressive, though the material is undeniably heavy and hard to process at times.
Overall, while the movie is well-crafted and engaging, the intense subject matter might not be for everyone. If you do choose to watch it, be aware of its darker themes.
