So, I just finished watching the new Descendants movie, and I have to say I really liked it. I’ve been a pretty big Kenny Ortega fan since High School Musical; that was my first introduction to him. I grew up watching High School Musical and have seen those movies many times. I love them all.
I remember a couple of years ago when Descendants came out, and honestly, I liked those movies too. I didn’t like them as much as High School Musical, but I definitely enjoyed them. When I saw the new Descendants: The Rise of Red was coming out, I definitely wanted to check it out. I was curious to see if it would be as good as the original series or different. What also captured my attention was that the popular musician Brandy was going to be in it, and it was going to be a reunion from Cinderella with the original prince and Cinderella. Cinderella was one of my favorite live-action adaptations of the story, so seeing them come back for this was so cool.
There was a lot going on with this movie, and I wanted to see how it was. I just finished watching it, and I have to say, overall, I liked it. The main story takes place… If you haven’t seen the original Descendants movie, I would recommend watching at least the first one before this. It would definitely help, but watching all three would give a better understanding of the spinoff.
Basically, the main plot is that Queen Red has a daughter named Red, from Alice in Wonderland, who is invited to attend the main school in Arendelle, a fictional fantasy world. When they arrive at the school, we find out that Brandy’s Cinderella and the Queen of Hearts used to be best friends but are now enemies. They mention that something terrible happened when they were younger, causing them to become enemies.
During the school’s opening ceremony, the evil Queen of Hearts takes everyone prisoner and claims to be the new queen of Arendelle. During this time, her daughter Red goes back in time with Cinderella’s daughter to try and change these events and figure out what caused the Queen of Hearts and Cinderella to become enemies.
I don’t want to spoil what happens, but that’s the main plot. It has a lot of cute songs, colorful visuals, and good lessons. For instance, there’s a lesson about why you don’t need to be rewarded for being good; if you’re truly a good person, you’ll do good no matter what. I really liked that message.
Overall, I liked the movie and am curious to see if there will be another part because it ended on a big cliffhanger. I’m excited to see what happens next!
